Christmas Matters to Me

Posted by: Erin on 5 Dec 2008 @ 10:54 am Category: Web Design

It's that time once again, only 20 more sleeps until Christmas. Shops have had their store fronts ready for Christmas for over a month now. It seems that making a store Christmas friendly is an extremely important task to get customers in and spending money. Compare Myer and David Jones for example. They spend an enormous amount of time and money on their window decorations. So much so,...

The Power of Twitter for Website Designers

Posted by: Warwick on 8 Oct 2008 @ 9:56 pm Category: Web Design

I'm not what you would call an early adopter. I only found out about twitter roughly 4 months ago, if that. However, I did a bit of Google surfing and found several posts on good designers to follow on Twitter (see below for 10 of the most insightful designers I follow).

I had my list so off I went and started following around 40 designers, web developers, graphic designers, and other...

Min-Height fix for IE

Posted by: Erin on 16 Sep 2008 @ 8:49 am Category: Web Design

I have never been a huge user of the min-height class in CSS, until a recent project where it needed to be used considerably. In the past it has always been possible to get around the problem by either settling for using a fixed width or compromising design aspects, because there was no other way that I had discovered to get it working cross browser.

There was no option in this...

Web to go for design inspiration

Posted by: Jamie on 9 Sep 2008 @ 4:47 pm Category: Web Design

Whether you think you are the best web designer in the world, or just a beginner, we all tend to draw inspiration from somewhere, even if we don't know it. There are a few different types of resources that give us designers some inspiration, for example, the Web, Television, Promotions, Posters/Signage, and even other people. To keep it short, I will just stick to the Web, and let...

The Browser Wars

Posted by: Andrew on 29 Aug 2008 @ 12:08 pm Category: Web Design

Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Other. Which browser do you use?

Everyone has a favourite. Have you ever stopped to think about why? Everyone has their own opinion, I hope it's more than just "Cause it's not Microsoft".

Because of inconsistencies in the different browser implementations every site renders the HTML differently. So for the exact same HTML Firefox might look different to...

5 Steps to a great website!

Posted by: Warwick on 23 Aug 2008 @ 3:12 pm Category: Web Design

STEP 1: The Brief.

The briefing process is one of the most important processes that a client and developer can go through. The brief is the basis of the project and can make or break the project.

From a client's perspective they need to know what they want! Bring examples and research the market. Look at what their competitors are doing. The brief is where the developer gets...

The elusive DIV

Posted by: David on 12 Aug 2008 @ 5:32 pm Category: Web Design

Well this will be my first blog post with Ireckon. I’ve been pondering on what would be my most insightful topic as a web designer in my first few weeks at Ireckon.

After some thought, the conclusion was the DIV tag.

Famed for revolutionising web design by making the good ol' table layout method redundant. But it is not without its woes.

Divs are a way to contain information, and style...

The Importance of Structure for your Website

Posted by: Erin on 30 Jul 2008 @ 9:14 am Category: Web Design

It has become evident over the past couple of weeks just how important it is to follow a set structure in both html and css files.

Most companies have their own set structure by which employees are expected to follow, for the obvious reason that several different employees may need to work on these files. Having a common structure allows this to be done quickly and efficiently. However, as...

How To: A simple trick to increase form functionality.

Posted by: Warwick on 22 Jul 2008 @ 9:55 pm Category: Web Design

I see it all the time. From small forms (e.g. logins or contact forms) to larger, more complex forms (e.g. sign-up or payment forms). It frustrates users and can even drive them away from your site.

What is it, you ask? It's when input boxes or text-areas have values in them that don't disappear when you select the field.

There are a variety of solutions for this, although some are...

One image CSS menus

Posted by: Bart on 24 Jun 2008 @ 9:32 am Category: Web Design

If you are a frequent world wide web surfer, you might have noticed menus on some websites where the hover state of a navigation item takes a second to load. This is probably because the menu is image based and the inactive and hover states are created by two separate images. This means that the hover state image won't load until the user moves their mouse over it.

I see this happening...

Adobe AIR

Posted by: Erin on 12 Jun 2008 @ 10:52 am Category: Web Design

Nearly everyday I see something new on the web that is innovative and pushing the boundaries. Whether it be a funky web design, a powerful graphic, or something more technical, it is apparent that the users experience on the web is forever changing. Not that we didn't all know that, but with the rapid adoption of Ajax technologies in the past few years, the Internet has seen a vast...

Your Homepage – Your Store Front

Posted by: Jason on 2 Jun 2008 @ 10:50 am Category: Web Design

When creating a website, the homepage is one of most important facets of the web design process and generally the rest of the site will flow from this page, so it is very important to get your homepage right first. A homepage in many ways is responsible for answering the key questions a visitor will have. Hopefully in writing this blog I can enlighten how users interact with a website and...

Posted by: Warwick on 23 May 2008 @ 3:26 pm Category: Web Design

From a simple contact form to a detailed profile series or checkout process. Forms are one of the most important elements of your website.

A bad form can lead to poor conversion rates, frustrated users and the loss of customers. A good form however can make what we call “Raving Fans” out of your customers.

Here are some quick tips we follow whenever we make a new form.  If you have...

Wouldn't it be cool if...

Posted by: Bart on 15 May 2008 @ 3:27 pm Category: Web Design

...I knew how to do everything on the web! But unfortunately, I don't, which is a shame because there are some really cool things you can do these days. And the best thing is that a lot of the times the only ingredients you will need is creativity and your best online buddy, Google.

When creating a new website I always try to make something about it different from anything I have done in...

Designing to the Client not the trend

Posted by: Warwick on 9 May 2008 @ 1:17 pm Category: Web Design

In most industries you are required to keep up to date with the latest technology, trends and training.  This is has never been more important than in today's information technology industries and web design is no different.  With "Web 2.0" and the idea of a "Web 2.0 design" it is hard not to get caught up in the rush and just design what you think looks "Web 2.0ish" and then dump the...

Challenges with Flash

Posted by: Erin on 23 Apr 2008 @ 12:14 pm Category: Web Design

When starting a new project, it can often be daunting. I know, if I don't know how to fulfill every aspect of the task first up, then I start to feel uneasy.

I have currently been working on a Flash project that has definitely given me a challenge. Flash allows you to do such a variety of things, it is impossible to know how to do absolutely everything. Flash also allows several...

One year and counting

Posted by: Bart on 8 Apr 2008 @ 9:45 am Category: Web Design

Finding work just after a University graduation is often a hard task for full and part time students. When looking at employment sites you'll find that most businesses will be looking for people with at least one or two years experience within their given industry. This is particularly true when it comes to IT and Multimedia, I should know as it was just over a year since I started...

Cross-browser Compatibility

Posted by: Warwick on 27 Mar 2008 @ 9:44 pm Category: Web Design

With the launch of the new ireckon.com website and with most sites come problems with different browsers interpreting the code behind a website differently. Whilst most users view websites in Internet Explorer 7 and a high percentage in Internet Explorer 6, there is a certain percentage that view websites on Macs' in Safari or in Windows on FireFox or Opera (two alternatives to Internet...
