The Browser Wars

Posted by: Andrew on 29 Aug 2008 @ 12:08 pm Category: Web Design

Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Other. Which browser do you use?

Everyone has a favourite. Have you ever stopped to think about why? Everyone has their own opinion, I hope it's more than just "Cause it's not Microsoft".

Because of inconsistencies in the different browser implementations every site renders the HTML differently. So for the exact same HTML Firefox might look different to...

Feature Creep

Posted by: Blair on 28 Aug 2008 @ 3:12 pm Category: Programming and Coding for the Web

I ride my bike to work everyday and, unfortunately, punctures are a regular hazard. In fact, it seems like I am forever buying new tubes. To try to mitigate this in future I have now bought myself a set of tyre liners. These are a nifty little product which sit between the tyre and the tube and are supposed to prevent any foreign objects that penetrate the tyre from puncturing the tube....

5 Steps to a great website!

Posted by: Warwick on 23 Aug 2008 @ 3:12 pm Category: Web Design

STEP 1: The Brief.

The briefing process is one of the most important processes that a client and developer can go through. The brief is the basis of the project and can make or break the project.

From a client's perspective they need to know what they want! Bring examples and research the market. Look at what their competitors are doing. The brief is where the developer gets...

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication!

Posted by: Narelle on 22 Aug 2008 @ 12:04 pm Category: Marketing

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” (Leonardo Da Vinci). I have this quote on my office wall and refer to it often during my day.

In a world where we seem to be constantly trying to complicate the uncomplicated, it’s often the simple things that work the best.

Take web design. Now I’m no expert – we have a great team of web designers here at ireckon who are brilliant at...

What you want verses what you ask for.

Posted by: Vanessa on 21 Aug 2008 @ 11:03 pm Category: Programming and Coding for the Web

One of the most frustrating parts of programming is misinterpretation. When we get asked to create software for clients the briefs can be very small and the expectations can be very large.

It is hard to see from a technical point of view sometimes what the client is actually asking, as personally, having done much analysis and building of product, I start to see it built as it is being...

Dom's 3 Stage Budget Campaign

Posted by: Dominique on 15 Aug 2008 @ 8:32 am Category: The Wondrous Wide Web

What do Clinton, Obama, Rudd and Howard have in common (apart from the obvious – They are political figures)? They all chose to use the internet as a campaign marketing scheme and had great success in doing so.

Why did they have great success? Well that's simple... some bright-minded crony decided to put them on the trendy track of social networking. Well actually, how Obama came about...

Does your website do PDF?

Posted by: Mark on 14 Aug 2008 @ 2:44 pm Category: Programming and Coding for the Web

A lot of website owners can answer "Yes" to this question. But how far does their PDF integration go? Do they only have downloadable but static PDF documents or does their website generate PDF files on the fly with dynamic data in it?

Where branding becomes more and more important each day, people still get ugly looking plain text e-mails containing their confirmation order or invoice from...

The elusive DIV

Posted by: David on 12 Aug 2008 @ 5:32 pm Category: Web Design

Well this will be my first blog post with Ireckon. I’ve been pondering on what would be my most insightful topic as a web designer in my first few weeks at Ireckon.

After some thought, the conclusion was the DIV tag.

Famed for revolutionising web design by making the good ol' table layout method redundant. But it is not without its woes.

Divs are a way to contain information, and style...

Andy's New Toy: PHP Taint Checking

Posted by: Andrew on 8 Aug 2008 @ 8:59 am Category: Programming and Coding for the Web

To help pickup possible SQL Injection issues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sql_injection) in our PHP code I've been messing about with a modified version of PHP that supplies taint checking.

If you're unfamiliar with taint checking you can check some pages like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taint_checking or http://perldoc.perl.org/perlsec.html.
In short - it is a way to have PHP...

Breaking Wine Glasses - How To

Posted by: Emily on 7 Aug 2008 @ 9:15 am Category: Inside Ireckon

As I have recently proven – it’s quite simple to break a wine glass. Glass goes on uneven surface, or out of view, glass is knocked and falls to the floor. Easy. What’s not so easy is cleaning up the spills – especially as I have a soft spot for red wine.. but I’m not here to talk about cleaning products.

So ultimately there are several factors at play here; gravity is the obvious one,...

Blog Entry: What the heck is a HTML? Return of the jargon.

Posted by: Aidan on 6 Aug 2008 @ 11:21 pm Category: Programming and Coding for the Web

My last blog entry was an attempt to describe a few of the technologies that enable we simple humans to work with and use the Internet and WWW. This time I will attempt to describe a few more technologies that enable the operation of the interwebs as we know and love them today, but I will be concentrating more on the software used to build interactive web-sites, as opposed to the...
